How it works

How cross-border commuters are taxed in Liechtenstein

  • Social contributions in Liechtenstein

AHV, IV, FAK, unemployment and accident insurance and your pension fund (BPVG) are deducted directly from your salary – just like for any employee in Liechtenstein.

  • At most 4% withholding tax

As a cross-border commuter, your employer in Liechtenstein withholds a tax of at most 4% of your gross salary (Art. 15 para. 4 DTA).

  • Taxed in your residence country

You pay income tax in Austria or Switzerland. The Liechtenstein withholding tax is credited there under the double taxation agreement – you don't pay twice.

The Liechtenstein payout is the amount after social contributions and 4 % withholding tax — what actually lands in your account each month. The last column is the position after assessment in your country of residence: the withholding tax is credited there, which is why lower salaries can end up higher than what was paid out.

Reference values, not tax advice. Pension fund and accident insurance contributions depend on the provider and are standard values here — the calculator above lets you adjust them.

Cross-border commuters & net pay – explained

How much withholding tax do I pay as a cross-border commuter in Liechtenstein?
Liechtenstein levies a withholding tax of at most 4% of gross salary on cross-border commuters (Art. 15 para. 4 DTA). You pay income tax mainly in your residence country, where these 4% are credited.
Where do I pay income tax – in Liechtenstein or at home?

Which social contributions are deducted in Liechtenstein?
AHV, IV and FAK (about 4.9% combined), unemployment insurance (ALV) as well as your pension fund (BPVG) and non-occupational accident insurance (NBU). BPVG and NBU depend on your employer.

Yes. Choose your residence country – the calculator accounts for income tax in Switzerland (including your municipality) or Austria.
